Seventy-six of our friends/classmates have passed, and we hope they all find peace forever.
Judy was 76, a wonderful grandmother, mother, and wife, and died on January 17, 2023, after a long illness. Judie was born in Dayton, Ohio, to Fred and Edith Hammonds in 1946. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1970. She began working at Monarch Marking in 1977, where he met the love of her life, William (Bill), and married him in 1978. Judie gave birth to Joseph in 1980 in Bradenton, Florida. Judie was known for her love of family, her incredible friends, and her love of animals, especially kitties.
Judie is survived by her husband, William Kell, Jr.; her son, Joseph Kell; her step-daughter, Trisha (Paul) Lough; two grandchildren, Alexander Kell and Anthony Kell; a nephew, Kenny (Dusty) Hammonds; and many other nephews, nieces, and cousins. Judie was predeceased by her mother, Edith Bookhammer; father, Fred Hammonds; brothers, Kenneth Hammonds and Dennis Hammonds; step-son, William Kell III, nephew Dennis Hammonds Jr., and niece, Chrissy Hammonds.
A memorial service will also be held at Newcomer-Kettering, on Kettering Blvd, at the convenience of the family.

Claudia Faye, age 74, of West Carrollton, OH, passed away Monday, March 28, 2022. She is preceded in death by her parents, Billy H. and Georgia Faye Avery. She is survived by her children, Craig (Denise) Furay, Shari Furay, and Chris (Jessica) Furay; two grandchildren Lilliana Furay and Abigail Furay; sisters, Cindy Avery and Christine (Randy) Thacker; and niece Amanda Avery.

It is with great sadness that the family of Susan "Shaw" Enslen Nickel, 74, announces her peaceful passing in the evening hours of December 11th, 2021. She was born to Imogene Brinkman and Norbert Enslen Sr. on January 11th, 1947, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She attended West Carrollton High School and Bowling Green State University (Class of '70). She was a highly-regarded hotel sales executive and, after retirement, was a dedicated philanthropist and volunteer for Clothes That Work and other charities. She was the life, the host, and the heart of the party — fiercely vibrant, exorbitantly generous, startlingly witty, endearingly brash, kind-hearted, and quietly resilient. Above all, she will be remembered for her love, which she shared deeply with her late husband John Nickel, unconditionally with her family and friends, and freely with all who crossed her path. And she was loved by God, before whom she now stands. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Nickel, her father, Norbert Enslen Sr., her mother, Imogene Brinkman, and her brothers, Michael Enslen, Carl Enslen, and Norbert Enslen, Jr. The viewing and service will be held at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Keith was a friend of ours for a lot of years. We RV'ed around the country with Keith and Ryka. And, of course, every Thursday night at the El Rancho Thirsty Thursday gathering. It was always a lively conversation with Keith. He is missed by everyone that knew him, and Thirsty Thursday won't quite be the same anymore. There will always be an empty chair for you at our table, old friend.
Keith E Shaffer, 74, died Friday, July 23, 2021, with his family by his side following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Keith Edward Shaffer was born on November 10, 1946, to Robert E. and Mildred M. (Leeds) Shaffer. He was a graduate of West Carrollton High School in 1965 and served in the United States Army from 1968 - 1970. On February 20, 1971, Keith married Ryka Bayless. Together they had two children, Nicole and Lance. They enjoyed 50 years of adventures together through softball, racquetball, motorcycling, camping, golfing, and travel.
Keith was a long-time employee of over 40 years at Dayton Progress in their engineering department. He was a member of the American Legion. He had a side business: K & R Stringing, where he strung most of the racquetball racquets and some tennis racquets in the state of Ohio for many years.
Surviving Keith are his wife, Ryka of Centerville, daughter, Nicole R. Williams of Dayton, son Lance ( Stacy ) of St Joseph, Michigan, grandchildren, Jonathan (Briana) Williams, Shane Williams, Aisley and Corinne Shaffer, and great-grandchildren, Madelyn, Emma, and Gage Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mildred Shaffer, sister, Norma May Shaffer, and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Constance and George Bayless.
Richard Maurice, WCHS Class of 196, passed away July 17, 2021, in Shreveport LA where he had lived for the last 50+ years. He settled there after discharge from the US Air Force after 6 years of active duty and then followed with 25+ years in reserves. Rest In Peace brother, the pain and suffering are over. He is survived by his wife Clara, son William, and daughter Sandra
Linda Reynolds received a call from Larry's sister with the sad news that Larry passed on April 8. Larry was cremated, and there will not be a memorial service. Linda did not have many details but did know that Larry had suffered from cancer, and cancer eventually spread to his lungs.
Many of you will remember Larry as a long-time Centerville English teacher. Larry started teaching in Magsig and also taught in Central, West, and the South units at the high school. Larry served as a department head during most of his teaching career. For many years, Larry handled senior graduation.

The Trost family would like to share the passing of William (Jim) Trost, class of 1965. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Connie Trost. He is survived by his children, Tracy Egleston and Jason Trost, five grandchildren, Jacob, Owen, and Bobby Trost, Ian and Lauren Egleston, his sister Bonnie Robinson and brother Robert (Tom) Trost. Jim served in our military and had many people that loved him. He will be greatly missed.

Mary and I pray for comfort and peace for the Trost family in this sad time, Jim was a memeber of the '65 basketball team as our starting point guard. He was one of three players who played on the the Sophomore team (a new concept to develope young players) then ended up as lettermen and starters! Jim and Tom Combs from the '65 team served in the military during that difficult time in our history. I remember Jim scoring 17 ponts is his very first game against Wayne! Jim and Dan Minix would drive to the Clayton/Northmont area to play ball all summer in Week's barn that was set up for full court basketball. His classmates and teammates will sorely miss his energy , determination, and quick smile.
MEHAFFIE, Stephen, Age 72, of Beavercreek, passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 28, 2020. He was a veteran of The United States Army and retired after 30 years of service from WPAFB, where he served as an Aerospace Engineer and a Program Manager for the Aces II Ejection Seat.
He was a member of the class of '65 of West Carrollton High School, an Eagle Scout, and a Greene County Master Gardener.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cecilia, and his two children Theresa Hoyle (Kenny) and James (Jill), and his four grandchildren, Wade and Leah Hoyle, and Joshua and Julia Mehaffie. His love, fondness, and wicked sense of humor will be cherished and missed by those blessed to know him. Thomas E. Steuer, age 72 passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 17th 2019 after his courageous battle with cancer.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Dorothy Steuer. He graduated from West Carrollton H.S. and attended the University of Kentucky. Tom retired from Medicount Management Inc. and was a Reserve Deputy with the Montgomery Co. Sheriff’s Office.
Tom is survived by his wife Melody, daughter Angela Singleton (Matt), son U.S. Army Major Ryan Steuer (Michelle) and three grandchildren, Delaney, Wesley and Caylee, along with his brother Joe Steuer (Alee), nieces Lauren Johnston (Michael), and Megan Pope (Jason) and many family and friends.
Tom enjoyed playing golf, NASCAR and The Ohio State University. Tom had a big heart and a great sense of humor sure to engulf a room in laughter and leave it happier than when he entered. He will be greatly missed by many friends and family.

Donald Edward Rice, 71, of Sparta, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2019, at Tennessee Veteran's Home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
He was born Tuesday, November 4, 1947, in Hazard, Kentucky. He was the son of the late James Rice and Dorothy Kilburn Rice. Donald served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, and he was a retired Police Chief. He was a member of FOP in Cookeville, TN, Cookeville Corvette Club, Police and Fire Retirees of Ohio, Masonic Lodge F&AM of Ohio, and the International Association Chief of Police ICAP in Ohio.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Father-in-Law, Willie Lee Selby.

Zimmer, Linda S., age 70, of West Carrollton, passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at her residence. She was born on November 6, 1947, in Dayton, Ohio the daughter of the late Ray G. & Mildred Jeanne (Schulz) Johnson.
Linda was a retired employee of The United Methodist Women, a 1965 Graduate of the West Carrollton High School; a member of the St. James United Methodist Church, Jacob Eby Chapter #571 O.E.S., and the West Carrollton Historical Society.
She is survived by two sons Richard Zimmer and wife Kathy, Rob Zimmer and wife Missy, five grandchildren, Max Zimmer, Mason Zimmer, Karen Linville and husband Robert, Christina Pasterick, and Richard Pasterick, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, best friend Stephanie Hayes, as well as other family members and many friends.

Let me start by writing that saying a final goodbye to the first and one of the only men ever truly to love me unconditionally was the hardest thing ever to endure. My father, Gary R. Rohn, passed away last night surrounded by friends and family who loved him.
It's taken me the good part of the day to reflect on my dad..... How I want everyone to know my version of the greatest man I've ever had the privilege of calling Daddy. Anything that has ever been good in me was because of him. His love, guidance, and belief that I could do anything guided me through life. The belief that family wasn't only skin deep. If you were a friend, it was the same as family, and he did anything and everything for his family. He taught me what it was to be a loving and caring parent to my children. I am the devoted mother of two amazing kids because of him. He taught me always to be proud of them no matter what and let them find their way. He was an amazing, proud and devoted grandfather to his grandchildren. Natural and adopted alike. There wasn't anything he wouldn't do for them. His adventures and love of life were limitless. He lived life to the fullest and had stories along the way. His long-winded, detailed, and very animated stories will carry on through his friends and family that knew him well. I know he wasn't ready to say goodbye to this great big world. In his heart, he had many more adventures to be had and shared. Thank you to our family and friends who held mine, my sister's, and my aunt's hands through this very tough time. You helped us get through it all. To say he will be missed is an understatement. I take comfort in knowing I will carry him always. I carry him in my heart.
ROHN, Gary Raymond, Age 67, passed away April 20, in Fair Oaks, California, surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born on May 6, 1947, and was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Amy Joyce. He is survived by his daughters, Amanda (Victor) Jones and Marissa (Travis) Weller; sister, Gail; five grandchildren, Avery, Allison, Sydney, Xander, and Addyson; two nephews, Dennis (Rachael) and Darrin.
Gary attended West Carrollton High School, Miami University, and served his country in the US Air Force. He worked for over 20 years as a satellite engineer for Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale, California. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling across the country in his RV, visiting friends along the way. He always made a trip for baseball spring training in Arizona with his close friend, Stephen McLaughlin. Upon his wishes, his earthly remains were donated to Stanford University for research.
There will be a memorial service in Dayton, Ohio, at a later date.
You were a good friend in '65, and a better friend in '15. I regret that we lived so far apart and had so little time to spend "catching up". Thank you, Gar, for being such an all around good guy. I miss you most.

Gary was the first boy I ever kissed! It was during the school musical, "Where's Charlie." He and I had to sing a smaltzy, mushy duet capped with a passionate kiss. We were 15! Mr. Dittman made us practice kissing on stage during rehearsals and everyone, except us, thought it was hilarious. Gary was such a gentleman with inexperienced me. Mr. Dittman gave him $10 and told him to take me on a date and practice!!!! While that date never happened, the onstage kiss did. When it came time for the big moment, I gathered up my courage and gave him a big smackeroo. He totally forgot his lines and replied,"Oh, thank you!" The audience broke into hysterics! IWe did, too! I will never forget Gary and his wonderful sense of humor.

POWELL, Sr. Rodney D. "Snake Eyes" 69 of Springboro passed away Friday morning, November 8, 2013, at Hospice of Butler-Warren County. He was born in Dayton the son of Harold and Aurelia (Hentrich) Powell. Rodney drove a school bus for the Springboro Board of Education for many years and was loved by many children that he transported. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. He recently retired from General Motors. MORAINE— The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the 62-year-old Moraine man who died after crashing his motorcycle on Ohio 4 on Friday, April 30, as Gary Barton of South Gettysburg Avenue. Barton was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m. at Miami Valley Hospital, according to the coroner’s office. The accident happened sometime around 3:06 p.m. A preliminary investigation suggests that Barton was driving his 2007 Harley-Davidson west on Hemple Road, east of Ohio 4, which is Germantown Pike, according to Moraine Det. Paul Guess. Barton was behind two other riders. “He lost control and went over the handlebars” and hit the pavement, Guess said of Barton, who was not wearing a helmet. Paramedics took Barton to Miami Valley Hospital. Crash investigators have not determined why Barton lost control and are checking if alcohol was a factor.

James Doyal Jones, formerly of Moraine, passed away in Johnson City, TX, on November 15, 2009. He passed away at home following a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer. He was a 1965 West Carrollton graduate. He proudly served in Viet Nam with the US Army. He was a retired Corrections Officer and had a second career with the US Post Office. He was a loving husband to Kathi; proud father to Jennifer, Joshua, Emily, and Sarah Beth; devoted grandfather to Noah; a loving son to his mother, Mildred Jones, and late father, William; loyal brother to Brenda Gray, Junior & Eddie, and his late brother, Tommy. Daniel Martin "Dan" Kingery, 57, of Priest River, passed away unexpectedly on August 29, 2005, in Newport, Wash., following heart failure. Dan was born September 3, 1947, in West Carrollton, Ohio the son of Rowdy and Jean Bowen. He graduated from West Carrollton High School in 1965 and attended college in Dayton, Ohio. Dan joined the United States Air Force in 1966 and served three years during the Vietnam War as an air rescue firefighter. On December 24, 1973, he married Linda Marie Cary in Fresno, Calif., and moved to Priest River, ID. in 1974. Dan has worked for 17 years as a machinist millwright with the Ponderay Newsprint Company in Usk. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, and everything to do with the outdoors. He is remembered for his great sense of humor, his ability to make everyone laugh, and his love for his family. Dan is survived by his wife Linda at the family home; four sons: Chris Kingery of San Francisco, Calif.; Tom (and Kristi) Kingery of Fort Hood, Texas; Ron (and Tammy) Kingery of Priest River; David (and Nicole) Kingery of Priest River; and five grandchildren. Survivors also include his mother, Jean Bowen of Ohio; one sister, Mindy (and Gary) Hall; and one brother, Tim (and Linda) Bowen; all of Ohio. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Rowdy. Terry was born June 18, 1947, in Dayton, Ohio. He served our country in the United States Army as a MP during the Vietnam Era.
He is survived by his son, Collin Cammarata; mother, Ferne E. HECK JR., LOUIS GEORGE, Lou Heck, CPA, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, of prostate cancer. Born in Indianapolis in 1946, Louie played drums for the marching band of West Carrollton High School. His ability to move his hands and feet independently not only made him a superior dancer but an accomplished drummer. Through various garage band incarnations, his ultimate group was renown for its smash hit, "Hang On Sloopy." After graduating from the University of Dayton (Go Flyers! Make them relinquish the ball, hey!) with his accounting degree, he came to Florida, where his mother had roots in Pine Castle. A lifetime of public accounting provided him with a wealth of client friends and a strong sense of community service. He excelled at counseling others, and his opinions, while varied, were never subtle. His membership in the Elks and Masons afforded him many opportunities to anonymously assist numerous causes. His unceasing spirit and exuberant humor are our strongest memories. His passion for the great outdoors included years of successful turkey hunting, unsuccessful deer hunting, one bear escape, and two fire pit escapes. He spent years sailing throughout the Caribbean, surviving being demasted, live turkey shipments, and eating cold, canned okra. Predeceased by his father, Louie is survived by his wife, Leslie; mother, June Sunday; sons, Lloyd and Ryan; their mother, Joyce; beloved daughters-in-law, Amy and Johannah; adored grandsons, Robbie and Caleb; "father," Julian Revels; girl comma friend Joann Lacey; and a wide array of stepsiblings, aunts, cousins, and friends. Patricia Carole Lauricella, 57, of Crossville, passed away on Feb. 6, 2005. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home. Mrs. Lauricella will lie in state from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at Cumberland Worship Center, with funeral services beginning at 1 p.m. Pastor Linus Vaughn will officiate, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens. Mrs. Lauricella was born on March 22, 1947, in Paris, KY. She retired in 2003 after being employed with Delbar Products, Inc. for 21 years, where she had worked as a quality analyst/documents coordinator. She was a member of Cumberland Worship Center. Survivors include her husband, Anthony J. Lauricella of Crossville; son, Brandon Willis of Richmond, VA; daughter and son-in-law, Tracey and James Barthelemy of Crossville; parents, James Arnold and Mary Cooper of Crossville; brother, James A. Cooper Jr. of Springboro, OH; sister-in-law, Beth Garber; beloved niece, Deanne Lauricella of Crossville; nephews, John and Jeff Cooper of Springboro, OH; and numerous cousins. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bread of Life Mission, Helping Hands Prison, and Outreach Ministries. Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

ROSS, Jona Louise age 55, of 40 Aloha Dr., Moraine, passed away suddenly at her home on Wednesday, May 1, 2002. A member of the Moraine Heights Baptist Church and Moraine Eagles.
She is survived by her daughter Drema Ross of Columbus, OH, adopted son James Michael Fortney of West Carrollton, two grandchildren Danielle Ross of Columbus, OH, and Jeffrey Jones of Miamisburg; parents James V. Ross and wife Ann of Miamisburg and Clara (Gore) Yanity of Moraine; 2 sisters Mary Wilson of Moraine, and Brenda Adams and husband Merill of Irvine, KY, brother Joe Morrison of VA, and several nieces and nephews. KUCK, Danny J. 54, formerly of Dayton, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, January 22, 2002, in California. He is survived by his parents, Fred and Phillis Kuck, sister Sandy (Mike) Staten, niece and nephew, Neely and Joseph Staten, and great nephew Drake Hansen. It was Dan's wish that there be no visitation, and requested a private service for family only. A celebration of life memorial service will be held in California at a later date.
Age 54 of Union passed away Saturday January 19, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mildred Clauss. He is survived by his former spouse and best friend Donna Clauss. Two sons survive him; Eri and Joseph Clauss, as do two daughters, Julie Wheeler and husband John and Jessica Clauss, as well as a special grandson JonathanWheeler. James was a 1965 graduate of West Carrollton High Schools and a 1977 graduate of Ohio University. Interment will be in Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery.

SMITH, Randall L., age 47, of Kettering, passed away on Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church and an employee of Delco Chassis for 27 years.
He was preceded in death by his sister Connie L. Smith Pike in June 1979.

SNOOTS, Charles R., 43, of West Carrollton, passed away Sunday at his residence following an extended illness. Charles was an Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam conflict. He was employed at Southview Hospital as a nuclear medicine technologist. I was a friend of Chuck's at Ohio University and hadn't heard from him since the mid 70's. I just found out today from another OU alum that Chuck had passed away over 20 years away. I'm very sorry to hear he's gone . I wish the best for Melann and Sonya.

HAMMOND, Kenneth R. (Hambone), age 42, of Dayton, died on January 20, 1989. A native of Dayton, Hambone was a well respected member of the Dayton Outlaws for over 15 years and a Vietnam Veteran. Survivors include his wife, Janet; his son, Steven of Kingwood, TX.; his parants, Ada & Elsworth Perry of Lexington, KY.; uncles Earl Abrahms of Lexington, John Abrams, Carl Abrams; aunts Edna Cox all of Camden, OH. Numerous cousins. Burial at Bear Creek Cemetery.
Debbie was a co-worker (St. Elizabeth's) and my roommate when we lived together '68-'69 on Shantz Ave. Our landlords George and Carol lived below us. Her boyfriend and my 1st husband were co-workers at Hauer Music on Far Hills. We had great times as roommates...2 young women working, renting the upper floor of a house and supporting each other in terms of dating young men. I called her "Debbie Daytripper" and attended boat races with her at Eastwood Lake.
Debbie was my matron of honor in 1969 and I participated in her wedding at Holy Angels Church 2/14/70
In later years I visited with she, Brigetta and Ashley when she lived in Kettering. I also went to Debbie's visitation.
Rest in Peace, Debbie.
In my 71st year, I have not forgotten you, your family and the good times we had.
Hi Joe. Yes, your message put me in a bit of a grief tailspin but what you're doing is so appreciated and admirable. I cannot thank you enough. Mom is buried next to her best friend, her Mom, Bettye J Flagg, at Highland Cemetery in Miamisburg. Dad passed in 1983 and is buried at the Dayton VA Cemetery. Greetings. I am Penny's son. She was an amazing, strong, beautiful woman whom I miss every single day (and it has been almost 30 years since she passed.) You might remember Mr. Hall from shop class - well - that was her husband and my father. Though troubles beset the two, they raised two grounded, responsible, and loving children. This is actually very painful to write even after all of these years. Thank you for offering a memorial space for Mom and just know, she cared deeply for all of you and her legacy continues through myself and my brother, and, her 10 year old Granddaughter who looks just like her. Have a great reunion and again, thank you for being Mom's friends!
West Carrollton Police Officer Died in Line of Duty
Patrolman Fred Beard was struck by a tractor-trailer and killed during a pursuit of a robbery suspect. The suspect vehicle stopped on I-75, and as Patrolman Beard exited his patrol car, he was struck by the semi. The suspect was apprehended and sentenced to 81 years in prison in connection with the incident.
Sewell, Robert L. III age 18, of 5618 Hollyhock Dr. near West Carrollton, died early Saturday morning from injuries received in an auto accident. He was a native of Greenville, Oh, a resident here for the past four years. A graduate of West Carrollton High School class of 1965, he was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and was employed as an apprentice at the Buckeye Tool Co. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Sewell Jr.; 1 brother, Steven Allen at home; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Ann Brown, Ansonia, Oh.; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Art Weese, Greenville, Oh.

The combined city-county traffic death toll jumped to 47 yesterday with the death of a 15-year-old West Carrollton boy. The victim, Gary Lee Brane, son of Mr. & Mrs. William R. Brane, 3180 Alexandersville-Bellbrook Road, was struck by a car around 7:30 pm Saturday while riding his bike. He died at 1:55 pm yesterday in Miami Valley Hospital.
The driver of the car was not cited, according to sheriff's deputies. Investigators said the youth was riding west on the 3200 block of Alex-Bell Rd and apparently tried to cross the road. Lucas smashed into the rear of the bike after trying to swerve around it, officers explained.
